Apache stop on my server - Spheerys - 11-23-2009 12:17 AM

Hi,

These days, my apache server stopped.
In the syslog file I have found this :
Quote:Nov 22 13:30:01 lumiere kernel: VFS: file-max limit 16384 reached
Nov 22 13:30:06 lumiere postfix/master[2180]: warning: master_wakeup_timer_event: service pickup(public/pickup): Too many open files in system

Any idea ?

VServer?

For sure!
Code:
VFS: file-max limit 16384 reached
Looks like you Server is a bit too small

I don't think my server is to small because I add memory and change the CPU recently to solve this problem, without success...

We talk about "max files" which has nothing todo with your CPU or Mem.
It is a VirtualServer or not ? If so, please check you beancounters.

I'm not sure to understand what do you mean with VirtualServer...
My host is Gandi.net and they are using Xen for their servers.

So maybe my server is a VirtualServer ?

And what can I do ? Increase one more time the power of my server ?

RE: Apache stop on my server - BeNe - 11-23-2009 07:20 PM

Ok this means you a Virtual Server based on XEN.

The Problem is not really the Power - it is the limit for the OpenFiles.
You can only open 16384 Files and not more, this limit has nothing todo with your CPU or RAM the first time and comes from XEN and the VE Config.

OK so what can I do ?
Change the provider ?
Ask them to change the config just for me ? Is it easy ?

I have this problem only with one server, and on this server, there is only one BIG site, with a big database.
Maybe there is a parameter somewhere to adapt the server to this special configuration ?

Disable all not needed Services --> http://www.isp-control.net/documentation/doku.php?id=howto:miscellaneous:run_ispcp_on_a_low_resources_system
