did you guys found the fix for this? cause i have the exact same thing, still using fcgi, outputs of both:
# ps aux |grep php5-cgi |wc -l
61
# ps aux |grep apache2 |wc -l
7
and it goes up and up and up, until it dies (or restart apache every 3 hours)
im searching for a way to limit the lifetime, if you guys found that in some manual, please point me to it, thanks!

Seriously, I was looking into some possible locking issues when givre had those problems (this thread is from january) with a really busy server, so that's why I wanted to take a look at his server.
I'm usually more reluctant to working for free
