That seems to have worked, at least to the stage where it's rejecting the email address as user unknown now.

A question: where was your smtpd.conf located? Just in case we come to the same problem again...

It was located in /etc/postfix/sasl directory, and as a reminder I installed ispcp on a fresh install of Debian Etch.
