Bit of progress:

copying /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf to /etc/ispcp/proftpd/ got past the hang.

Had rolling errors trying to get the stable version working with my (unsupported) version of Ubuntu, so hopped over to the daily and was able to install cleanly on the first shot Smile
