La cosa es que debian no viene con sendmail instalado, nisiquiera si le dices al instalador que te configure la máquina como servidor de correo (te instala exim).

Por eso digo que la debian que te dan con tu VPS no es una instalación limpia (la gente de burst.net ha trasteado cosas) y puede que tengas algún otro problemilla en el futuro.
