Mod_rewrite zickt rum ISPCP 1.0.5

Hallo zusammen
ich betreibe einen Debian 5 Linux VPS und habe mir ISPCP installiert
Nun es schien alles In Ordnung - dort rennt wunderbar ein WBB3.1 doch wollte ich nun eine weitere Seite drauf machen welche Mod Rewrite zwingend benötigt.
Ich hab geschaut - Mod_rewrite ist drauf + rennt
naja zumindest scheint es so doch es klappt halt einfach nicht
mein script hat eine htaccess welche richtig ist - denn auf nem free webspace rennt es - hab es dort getestet
Wer kann mir helfen?

edit: hab nun vps mehrfach neu gestartet und nun erhalte ich nen 500er fehler dort wo ne htaccess mit ner rewrite engine liegt ... entferne ich die htaccess ist der 500er weg aber site geht nicht wie gewollt ...
