Can I add a domain to my hosted panel domain?
I have my ispcp panel running on the domain domain1.com

I also used to have a hosting site on domain1.com but have not added it since I switched to ispcp. when I go to http://www.domain1.com it goes straight to the panel.

Can I add domain1.com as a virtual site or will this kill the panel?
I need to create email for the domain as well. I would like to see the domain stats and etc.

I'm looking for advice on the proper way to achieve this without breaking the panel.

No

That's why there is (or at least *was*) a warning when a hostname without hostpart is given during the setup.

Well - of course it's possible - you have to change the whole setup to an own hostname for the panel.

I'm not sure I understand what you just said. Made no sense to me.

ispcp runs as VirtualHost in Apache (the default VirtualHost), and the customer domains also are running as VirtualHosts - but you cannot run the same VirtualHost-Name two times - there's only one which comes to the browser...

So it's best not to use the domainname (alone) for ispcp - always add at least a host part (controlpanel.domain.tld or something like this) during setup...
It's possible to change the URL for ispcp - then you can add the domain to the users list.

ispCP should be also running under admin.domain.tld per default.
Please check this before that you can enter with this URL into ispCP.
If this works you can create a normal domain under http://www.domain.tld
and ispCP runs under admin.domain.tld

Dont forget the needed DNS entry for admin.domain.tld
