is it possible that smtp is missing in /etc/services?

It could be possible that the file for chroot and the normal /etc/services differ...

or the file is missing there

it's alright now after i edit the postfix conf
virtual_mailbox_base = /var/spool/mail/virtual

Well - in most distros /var/spool/mail is the same as /var/mail. In some it's a symlink from the first to the second (debian etch) in others its vice versa (eg. suse 10.0)...
