Basic HTTP Auth Fails

On my server $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_{USER,PW}'] variables are not auto-populated when running under fastcgi, and I've to "manually" build them from $_SERVER['HTTP_AUTHORIZATION'] directive like this (it's a single long line):
