i can see user=vmail but none group=vmail... Am I blind or something??? can you post the complete dovecot.conf

in point 5 of the avelsieve howto there it reads "Add the following lines"

There is no sentence with overwrite the existing config...

in your dovecot.conf the following part is missing:
