what exactly did you change in the common_code?

changed $main::engine_debug = undef; to $main::engine_debug = 1;

try to set it to '1';

You don't need to change common code:

if ($main::cfg{'DEBUG'} != 0) {
$main::engine_debug = '_on_';
}

if you enable debug in the /etc/ispcp/ispcp.conf then commoncode also will output debug messages... (and it should be set to '_on_'
