Hi,

I just got exactly the same problem on a clean Ubuntu 8.04 64bits / ISCP Omega RC6. Here is the error log:

[Sun Aug 24 06:27:04 2008] [notice] caught SIGWINCH, shutting down gracefully
[Sun Aug 24 06:27:22 2008] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: read() from pipe failed (0)
[Sun Aug 24 06:27:22 2008] [alert] (2)No such file or directory: FastCGI: the PM is shutting down, Apache seems to have disappeared - bye

I am going to try the suggested changes.

RE: Apache just stopped :O!!
I just noticed that the problem is related to log rotation. Always happens near 6:30AM. Apache stops after log rotation and does not restart.

Error.log:

Crash is happening at log rotation time. Logs are rotated but server dies and does not restart... I have tried to replace the "apache2 reload" by a "apache2 restart" in logrotate.d/apache2... I hope it will fix the problem...

There is a low traffic on the server atm because I have not yet (hopefully) migrated all my websites on the server. Server load should not be a problem (Xeon Quad Core with 8Gb RAM).

I am running Ubuntu 8.04LTS 64bits

Server version: Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu)

PHP 5.2.6-2ubuntu3 with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.6.2 (cgi-fcgi) (built: Aug 20 2008 15:59:29)

Default apache2.conf :

Quote:#
# Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
#
# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/ for detailed information about
# the directives.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
# 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
# whole (the 'global environment').
# 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
# which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
# These directives also provide default values for the settings
# of all virtual hosts.
# 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
# different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
# same Apache server process.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/apache2/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "" will be interpreted by the
# server as "//var/log/apache2/foo.log".
#

### Section 1: Global Environment
#
# The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
# such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
# can find its configuration files.
#

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
# mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation (available
# at <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.1/mod/mpm_common.html#lockfile>);
# you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
#
# Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/apache2"

#
# The accept serialization lock file MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL DISK.
#
#<IfModule !mpm_winnt.c>
#<IfModule !mpm_netware.c>
LockFile /var/lock/apache2/accept.lock

#
# PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
# identification number when it starts.
# This needs to be set in /etc/apache2/envvars
#

#
# Timeout: The number of seconds before receives and sends time out.
#
Timeout 300

#

# one request per connection). Set to "Off" to deactivate.

RE: Apache just stopped :O!!
you have a find in apache2.conf
uncomment this lines
and add ExtendedStatus On

<ifmodule mod_status.c>
<location /server-status>
SetHandler server-status
</location>
....

after you'll see the apache tread, if you type a webbrowser your ip and /server-status
examp. : 87.229.2.55/server-status
some website make a lot ordering width not too much traffic.
they run out it apache threads
you can find the domain in the server-status list (80%),what many times can be found
that is a advertisement server swich off!

or DOS you are the victim of an attack

Server-status is up, and Apache server is running fine. No overload, or other problem.

Anyway I just noticed ownerships and rights in /var/log/apache2 were a mess. I am trying to investigate any possibilities. Given the fact apache is dying after log rotation that may be a path to investigate. Could anyone post which ownerships and mode should be used for /var/log/apache2 directory and files inside?

Currently I have:
